Tragus Piercing in Homer Glen, IL
The tab in front
of the ear canal.
The tragus is the small, triangular tab of cartilage that partially covers the ear canal opening. It’s one of the most popular ear piercings precisely because of its placement — visible from the front, subtle in profile, and perfectly positioned to catch the light.
Tragus piercings sit close to the face, which makes jewelry selection especially important. The right piece — well-sized and cleanly placed — reads as deliberate and refined. A flatback labret with a small CZ or opal end is the classic choice for a reason: it lets the ear do the talking without competing with it.
Like any cartilage piercing, anatomy matters. We assess the thickness and shape of your tragus before committing to placement and jewelry. Most clients are good candidates — the tragus is one of the more accessible cartilage locations — but a proper look before piercing protects the long-term result.

Why Choose The Piercing Boutique
What makes us
different.
01
Right-Sized From the Start
The tragus sits close to the face — jewelry proportion matters immediately. We select starting pieces sized for your anatomy: long enough to accommodate swelling, short enough to avoid snagging. That balance is the difference between an easy heal and a complicated one.
02
Implant-Grade Only
Every initial piece is ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium or solid 14k gold. Biocompatible, low-nickel, anodized without surface coating. No surgical steel, no plated metals, no mystery alloys.
03
Sterile Technique Every Time
Single-use sterile needles, autoclaved tools, hospital-grade surface disinfectants. We never use guns. The tragus is small, but it gets the same standard of care as every other piercing we do.

The Experience
What happens at
your appointment.
1
Check-In & ID Verification
Everyone gets carded. Clients under 18 require a parent or legal guardian present with valid ID. The child must verbally consent to their piercing.
2
Anatomy Assessment
We look at the size, thickness, and shape of your tragus. Most ears work well for this piercing, but we confirm before committing to ensure the best placement and jewelry fit.
3
Jewelry Selection
We walk you through flatback options — post length, end style (CZ, opal, plain bead), and anodization color for titanium. All initial jewelry is implant-grade and sized for your anatomy.
4
Marking & Approval
We mark placement and show you in the mirror before we do anything. We don’t pierce until you’re completely satisfied with where it will sit.
5
The Piercing
One smooth pass with a sterile hollow needle. The tragus is one of the more comfortable cartilage piercings — brief, controlled pressure, then done. Jewelry placed immediately.
6
Aftercare Walk-Through
We cover cleaning routine, earbuds guidance, what to expect in the first weeks, and your downsize window before you leave. Call or message us anytime throughout healing.
What We Pierce With
Tragus jewelry —
starting & healed.
Standard Start
Flatback Labret Post
The ideal starting jewelry for a tragus. The flat disc sits flush against the back of the cartilage — no exposed threading, no snag, no pressure points. Available in implant-grade titanium in a wide range of anodized colors with CZ, opal, or plain bead ends.
Anatomy-Specific
Curved Barbell
For anatomies where a flatback doesn’t sit well, a curved barbell may be recommended. Less common for the tragus, but the right call for certain ear shapes. We advise based on what we see during the assessment — never a one-size-fits-all approach.
Healed Upgrade
Small Seamless Ring
A thin seamless ring through the tragus is a striking healed look — delicate and clean. Not recommended as a starting piece due to movement during healing, but one of the most elegant options once the piercing is fully matured at 6–9 months.
Premium Option
Solid 14k Gold
For healed tragus piercings, 14k solid gold end attachments elevate the look considerably. Star ends, prong-set CZs, opal cabochons — all sit beautifully on the tragus and catch the light in a way titanium simply can’t match.
We use implant-grade ASTM F136 titanium and solid 14k gold only. Biocompatible, low-nickel, anodized without surface coating. No surgical steel, no plated pieces, no mystery metals. Every piece we carry is appropriate for a healing tragus from day one.
Tragus aftercare —
do’s & don’ts.
- Clean twice daily with sterile saline spray — spritz and let air-dry
- Rinse in the shower, letting warm water flow over the tragus
- Use over-ear headphones instead of earbuds during healing
- Return for your downsize at 6–8 weeks
- Keep hair products and lotion away from the piercing area
- Sleep on the opposite side or use a travel pillow with a center hole
- Contact us if anything looks or feels concerning — earlier is better
- In-ear earbuds or AirPods — they press directly on the piercing
- Touching, twisting, or rotating the jewelry
- Submerging in pools, lakes, or hot tubs during healing
- Ointments, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or tea tree oil
- Sleeping directly on the piercing side
- Changing jewelry before fully healed
- Over-cleaning — twice a day is correct; more disrupts healing
Questions & Answers
Tragus piercing
FAQ.
Can I wear earbuds with a tragus piercing?▼
Not during healing. In-ear earbuds — including AirPods, foam tips, and silicone earphones — sit directly against the tragus and press on the jewelry, introduce bacteria, and create constant movement that disrupts healing tissue. During the healing period, switch to over-ear or bone-conduction headphones. Once fully healed at 6–9 months, most clients return to earbuds without issues.
How painful is a tragus piercing?▼
Generally low to moderate — the tragus is one of the more comfortable cartilage piercings. The tab is relatively thin and accessible, so the needle passes through quickly. Most clients describe a brief, sharp pressure followed by a dull throb that fades within an hour. Knowing what to expect helps considerably.
What’s the difference between a tragus and anti-tragus?▼
The tragus is the small tab directly in front of the ear canal. The anti-tragus is the small raised ridge directly opposite — above the earlobe and below the ear canal. Anti-tragus piercings are considerably more anatomy-dependent (many ears don’t have enough tissue for one) and tend to be slower healers. Come in and we’ll assess which placements your anatomy supports.
What jewelry works best for a tragus?▼
For healing, a flatback labret post is almost always the best choice — the flat disc backing sits flush against the cartilage with no sharp edges or exposed threading. End options include plain beads, CZ prong sets, opals, and starburst designs. Once healed, a thin seamless ring is a beautiful alternative. Flat disc ends remain the most popular long-term because they sit so cleanly against the face.
How long does a tragus take to heal?▼
Typically 6–9 months. The tragus is one of the faster-healing ear cartilage piercings because the tissue is relatively accessible with decent blood supply. That said, the outside often looks and feels healed before the internal fistula is fully formed. We recommend continuing aftercare for the full timeline before making jewelry changes.
Is everyone’s anatomy suitable for a tragus?▼
Most people are — the tragus is one of the more universally accessible ear cartilage piercings. The main considerations are thickness and projection. A tragus that’s very flat against the ear or unusually thin may require a specific placement approach. We assess before committing, and if yours needs a modified approach, we’ll explain it before we proceed.
How does the tragus fit into a curated ear?▼
The tragus is one of the most face-forward placements in a curated ear — it sits right at the edge where ear meets cheek, so it’s always visible in conversation. A small, refined piece here pulls the eye toward the ear in an understated way. It pairs especially well with helix and lobe piercings, where the eye travels naturally from lobe up through the stack to the tragus point.
Do I need an appointment or can I walk in?▼
Both. Walk-ins are welcome first come, first served — no reservation needed. To guarantee your spot, book at
thepiercingboutique.com/booking. Hours are Monday 12–7pm, Friday–Saturday 12–8pm, and Sunday 12–7pm. Closed Tuesday through Thursday.
