Industrial Piercing in Homer Glen, IL
One barbell,
two cartilage placements.
An industrial piercing — also called a scaffold or bar piercing — connects two separate cartilage holes with a single straight barbell, typically running diagonally across the upper ear. It’s one of the most visually striking ear piercings available, and one of the most anatomy-dependent.
Not every ear can accommodate a standard industrial. The angle, the ridge depth, the cartilage thickness — all of it factors into whether a traditional industrial is viable, or whether a different configuration makes more sense for your ear. We always assess before we commit to placement.
Healing takes patience: 9–12 months minimum, often longer. Two healing sites connected by a bar means any movement that irritates one hole also affects the other. With the right placement, the right jewelry, and consistent aftercare, it heals beautifully.

Anatomy Matters
Not every ear is
built for an industrial.
The industrial requires two specific structures: a well-defined helix ridge on the outer ear, and a stable antihelix or forward helix point to anchor the inner hole. When the ear’s cartilage ridges are flat, the helix rolls inward, or the anatomy creates a shallow channel — forcing a traditional industrial creates chronic pressure and puts the piercing at serious risk of rejection.
When anatomy doesn’t support a classic placement, there are still options. A faux industrial using two separate helix piercings connected by a bar once healed achieves the same visual result without the single-needle approach. We’ll talk you through the possibilities during your consultation, which is part of every appointment.
Come in, let us look at your ear first. That conversation takes about five minutes and could save you 18 months of healing problems. We won’t pierce something we don’t think will work.
Why Choose The Piercing Boutique
What makes us
different.
01
Honest Before Anything Else
If your anatomy doesn’t support a healthy industrial, we tell you that before we touch a needle — not after two holes are in your ear. We assess every client and explain what we see. No pressure, no upsell, just the truth.
02
Implant-Grade Titanium Only
Every industrial we do starts with ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium. The material sitting in two healing wounds for the next year-plus must be biocompatible. No surgical steel, no plated pieces, no mystery metals.
03
Sterile Technique Every Time
Single-use sterile needles, autoclaved tools, hospital-grade surface disinfectants. We never use guns. The industrial is one of the more technically demanding piercings — it requires precision from start to finish.
The Experience
What happens at
your appointment.
1
Check-In & ID Verification
Everyone gets carded. Clients under 18 require a parent or legal guardian with valid ID. The child must verbally consent before we proceed.
2
Anatomy Assessment
We look at your helix ridge, the angle of your upper ear, and the tissue depth on both planned holes. We confirm a traditional industrial is viable, or we discuss alternatives if it’s not.
3
Jewelry Selection
We select a titanium barbell sized for your ear’s span, with extra length to accommodate initial swelling. We’ll walk you through color options for anodized titanium.
4
Marking & Approval
We mark both holes and show you the proposed line in the mirror. You approve the placement before we do anything. The angle is everything with an industrial — this step is not rushed.
5
The Piercing
Two separate needle passes, one for each hole, in quick succession. Cartilage pressure both times — brief and manageable. The barbell is threaded through immediately after.
6
Aftercare Walk-Through
We cover saline cleaning, sleep protection, headphone restrictions, snagging hazards, and what to do if a bump appears. Call or message us anytime throughout healing.
What We Pierce With
Industrial jewelry —
starting & healed.
Standard Start
Straight Barbell — 14g
Every industrial starts with a straight barbell in 14g gauge. The initial bar is longer than your ear’s final measurement — the extra length is essential to accommodate swelling during the first weeks of healing. Ball ends in various titanium colors.
Material
Implant-Grade Titanium
ASTM F136 titanium is what every industrial gets here. Lightweight, nickel-free, and anodized to any color through the metal itself — not a coating. The only material we use for initial piercings of any kind.
Once Healed
Decorative Barbells
Once the piercing is fully healed you can move into decorative barbells — gem clusters, textured ends, shaped tops, or custom lengths sized precisely to your ear span. We help you find something you’ll love at your follow-up.
Correctly Sized
Downsizing the Bar
After initial swelling resolves, the long starter bar should be swapped for a shorter one that fits flush. Excess length causes snagging and adds leverage against both holes. We handle all downsizes in-studio.
We use implant-grade ASTM F136 titanium for all industrial piercings. Biocompatible, nickel-free, anodized without surface coating. No surgical steel, no plated pieces, no mystery metals. The material touching two healing wounds simultaneously must be right from day one.
Industrial aftercare —
do’s & don’ts.
- Clean twice daily with sterile saline spray — spritz both holes and let air-dry
- Use a travel neck pillow sideways to protect the bar while sleeping
- Sleep on the opposite side whenever possible
- Return for your barbell downsize once initial swelling resolves
- Keep hair products and lotion away from both holes
- Contact us immediately if bumps appear — address the source early
- Stay consistent — twice daily, every day, for the full healing period
- Over-ear headphones — direct pressure on the barbell irritates both holes
- Hats, hoods, or beanies that press on the bar
- Hair getting caught on either end of the barbell
- Touching, twisting, or rotating the jewelry
- Submerging in pools, lakes, hot tubs, or baths during healing
- Ointments, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or tea tree oil
- Changing jewelry before 12 months minimum
Questions & Answers
Industrial piercing
FAQ.
How much does an industrial piercing hurt?▼
You’re pierced twice in quick succession through cartilage, so it’s more intense than a lobe piercing. Most clients describe sharp pressure on each pass, followed by a throbbing ache for the first hour or two. The second hole can feel more sensitive because the tissue is already activated. That said, it’s fast and manageable. Eat something beforehand and take a few deep breaths.
Can I get an industrial with a flat helix?▼
It depends on the specific anatomy, which is exactly why we assess before committing. A flat helix doesn’t automatically rule out an industrial — sometimes it changes the angle, sometimes a faux-industrial approach makes more structural sense. We look at your ear and give you an honest answer. We won’t pierce something we don’t think will hold.
How long does an industrial take to heal?▼
Plan for a minimum of 9–12 months before you consider it functionally healed. Full tissue maturation, where jewelry can safely be changed without risk, is typically 12 months or longer. Two wound sites healing simultaneously, connected by a shared bar, means the industrial is among the slower-healing ear piercings. Don’t rush the timeline.
Can I wear headphones with an industrial?▼
Over-ear headphones put direct pressure on the barbell and are one of the most common sources of industrial irritation. During healing, switch to in-ear buds on that side if possible, or avoid headphones on that ear entirely. If headphones are non-negotiable for work or daily use, it’s worth discussing with us before you book.
What causes the bump that sometimes forms?▼
Irritation bumps on industrials are almost always mechanical — snagging, sleeping on the bar, hats pressing against it, or headphone pressure. They’re not infections, and they don’t mean the piercing has to come out. Identify and remove the source of irritation first, and give it time. If the bump isn’t resolving, come in and let us take a look before doing anything else.
What if my industrial starts to reject or migrate?▼
Rejection and migration most often happen when a piercing is placed incorrectly for the anatomy, or when the jewelry is too heavy, too thin, or the wrong material. If you notice the bar sitting at a different angle than when you were first pierced, visible tissue thinning near either hole, or persistent redness that doesn’t resolve — come see us. Early intervention almost always prevents the worst outcomes.
What is a faux industrial?▼
A faux industrial uses two separate helix piercings that are connected by a bar once both are fully healed, rather than a single needle pass through both points at once. It achieves the same visual result, and for ears where a traditional industrial would be risky or uncomfortable, it’s often the better solution. We assess your anatomy and recommend the approach that will actually hold long-term.
Do I need an appointment or can I walk in?▼
Both. Walk-ins are welcome first come, first served. For an industrial — where the anatomy assessment and placement markup take real time — booking ahead at
thepiercingboutique.com/booking is the way to guarantee your slot. Hours are Monday 12–7pm, Friday–Saturday 12–8pm, Sunday 12–7pm.
