Conch Piercing in Homer Glen, IL

The wide shell of
inner ear cartilage.

The conch is the large, curved cartilage that forms the bowl of the ear — named for its resemblance to a conch shell. It offers more surface area than almost any other ear piercing location, which means more creative freedom in placement and jewelry style.

The conch sits in the large, curved cup of cartilage that forms the bowl of your ear. Placement within that bowl matters — we assess your anatomy and your jewelry goals before marking anything. The conch offers exceptional real estate for decorative flatback ends and, once healed, rings that hug the cartilage in a way no other ear piercing can match.

The conch is one of the most versatile ear piercings for jewelry. Flatback ends with elaborate tops, large decorative studs, and — once healed — rings that hug the cartilage bowl all look exceptional here. It’s a piercing that rewards patience and good taste.

Why Choose The Piercing Boutique

What makes us
different.

01
Placement Conversation First
Ring or stud, central or offset — the conch rewards intentional placement. We talk through your vision, assess your ear’s shape and existing piercings, and mark accordingly. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here.
02
Implant-Grade Only
Every initial piece is ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium or solid 14k gold. Biocompatible, low-nickel, anodized without surface coating. The conch is one of the thicker cartilage locations — it needs the cleanest materials available from day one.
03
Sterile Technique Every Time
Single-use sterile needles, autoclaved tools, hospital-grade surface disinfectants. We never use guns. The conch is thicker cartilage than most other ear placements — precision needle technique is not optional here.

The Experience

What happens at

Conch piercing gold tri-wire end in curated ear — The Piercing Boutique Homer Glen IL
1
Check-In & ID Verification
Everyone gets carded. Clients under 18 require a parent or legal guardian with valid ID. The child must verbally consent.
2
Placement Consultation
We discuss your existing piercings and jewelry goals. A future ring or a statement flatback changes where we place it — we look at your ear and advise accordingly.
3
Jewelry Selection
We walk you through flatback options — post length, end style (CZ, opal, cluster, plain), and titanium anodization color. All initial jewelry is implant-grade and sized to accommodate initial swelling.
4
Marking & Approval
We mark the placement and show you in the mirror before touching a needle. Nothing proceeds until you’re fully satisfied with where it will sit.
5
The Piercing
One smooth pass with a sterile hollow needle. The conch is thicker cartilage than the helix — expect more pressure, but still brief and manageable. Jewelry is placed immediately afterward.
6
Aftercare Walk-Through
We cover cleaning routine, sleep positioning, what’s normal, and your downsize window before you leave. Call or message us anytime throughout healing.
What We Pierce With

Conch jewelry —
starting & healed.

Standard Start
Flat-Back Labret Post
The right starting piece for a conch piercing. The flat disc sits flush against the back of the cartilage — no exposed threading, no pressure points, nothing to catch. Available in implant-grade titanium in a full range of anodized colors with your choice of decorative end.
Healed
Decorative Flatback Ends
The conch’s wide, open surface is ideal for statement flatback ends. Opal arcs, CZ clusters, floral designs, and marquise fans all sit beautifully here with plenty of cartilage framing them. These remain popular long after healing because the jewelry has real room to be seen.
Premium Option
Solid 14k Gold
Once healed, 14k solid gold transforms a conch. Prong-set CZs, opal cabochons, and pavé cluster ends in gold are exceptionally elegant here. The conch’s scale means the jewelry is fully visible — gold reads as refined and intentional in a way that rewards the placement.

We use implant-grade ASTM F136 titanium and solid 14k gold only. Biocompatible, low-nickel, anodized without surface coating. No surgical steel, no plated pieces, no mystery metals. Every piece we carry is appropriate for a healing conch from day one.

Conch aftercare —
do’s & don’ts.

What To Do
  • Clean twice daily with sterile saline spray — spritz and let air-dry
  • Rinse in the shower, letting warm water run over the conch
  • Sleep on the opposite side or use a travel pillow with a center hole
  • Return for your downsize at 2–3 months
  • Keep hair products, perfume, and lotion away from the area
  • Stay consistent — twice daily for the full healing period
  • Contact us if anything looks or feels wrong — earlier is better
What To Avoid
  • Touching, twisting, or rotating the jewelry
  • Sleeping directly on the piercing — the number one cause of irritation bumps
  • Submerging in pools, lakes, hot tubs, or baths during healing
  • Ointments, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or tea tree oil
  • In-ear earbuds if they contact or press the conch area
  • Changing jewelry before fully healed
  • Over-cleaning — twice a day is the correct amount
Questions & Answers

Conch piercing
FAQ.

What is a conch piercing?
The conch is the large curved cartilage that forms the bowl of the ear — named for its resemblance to a conch shell. It sits inside the outer rim (helix) and offers more real estate than almost any other ear piercing location. Decorative flatback ends, opal arcs, CZ clusters, and — once healed — rings all look exceptional here. Placement within the bowl is assessed based on your anatomy and jewelry goals.
How painful is a conch piercing?
Moderate — the conch is thicker tissue than the helix, tragus, or rook. Most clients describe sustained pressure for a second or two, then it’s over. With proper needle technique — one smooth, decisive pass — the sensation is brief and entirely manageable. We never use guns, which would make it significantly worse and cause tissue damage.
Can I get a conch ring right away?
Not as starting jewelry. Rings move, which disrupts healing tissue and reliably causes irritation bumps and slow, complicated healing. The right starting piece is a flat-back labret post — it stays still, sits flush, and gives the tissue the stability it needs. Once your conch is fully healed (6–9 months), a ring is an excellent and beautiful choice. The wait is genuinely worth it.
How long does a conch take to heal?
Conch piercings typically heal in 6–9 months. The conch is denser cartilage than the helix or tragus, so healing takes longer than most ear piercings. The surface looks and feels healed well before the fistula is fully formed inside. We recommend continuing aftercare for the full timeline before switching jewelry.
How does the conch fit into a curated ear?
The conch is one of the most impactful placements in a curated ear because of its scale and centrality. A statement flatback in the inner conch anchors the whole ear — it’s framed by the cartilage bowl and highly visible from the front. Whether you want a refined, minimal look or something bolder, the conch earns its place in almost any ear styling direction.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Both. Walk-ins are welcome first come, first served — no reservation required. To guarantee your spot and skip any wait, book at thepiercingboutique.com/booking. Hours are Monday 12–7pm, Friday–Saturday 12–8pm, and Sunday 12–7pm. Closed Tuesday through Thursday.
Can earbuds affect my healing conch?
Yes, if they press on or near the conch. In-ear (AirPod-style) earbuds that sit in the bowl of the ear can contact a healing conch and cause pressure irritation. We recommend avoiding them for the first few months, or switching to over-ear headphones while healing. Once fully healed, most clients find earbuds work fine alongside a healed conch.
Will my conch and daith piercings interfere?
Not if both are healed and the jewelry is correctly sized. During active healing, having both a conch and a daith healing simultaneously on the same ear is manageable — your body heals all active piercings concurrently. The placements are far enough apart that they don’t directly compete. We discuss any combination healing scenario with you during your consultation so you can plan timing intentionally.

Healing Timeline

What to expect —
start to finish.

The conch is thicker cartilage than most ear piercings. Healing takes 6–9 months with consistent aftercare. An early downsize at 2–3 months is essential.

Stage 1
Weeks 1–4
Swelling, tenderness, redness. Fully normal. Clean twice daily with saline. Hands off entirely.
Stage 2
Months 1–2
Swelling reduces. Clear or white discharge is normal lymph fluid. Continue twice-daily saline cleaning consistently.
Stage 3
Months 2–3
Downsize. The longer initial post is swapped for a correctly fitted flatback. Don’t skip this — it prevents irritation bumps.
Stage 4
Months 3–9
Looks healed outside, still maturing inside. Continue aftercare. Avoid pools, lakes, and hot tubs.
Stage 5
6–9 Months
Full maturation. Now explore rings, statement ends, and 14k gold upgrades. Consider your next ear placement.
