Helix Piercing in Homer Glen, IL
The outer rim —
where every ear story begins.
The helix is the outer curved rim of the ear cartilage. It’s the most popular ear piercing location after the lobe — and for good reason. The helix offers a long run of cartilage with multiple placement options, pairs effortlessly with every other ear piercing, and suits every jewelry style from minimalist to elaborate.
A single helix flatback stud is a clean starting point. Two or three stacked in a diagonal line reads as a considered curation. A statement cluster end in the fold of the helix draws the eye up the ear in a way nothing else does. The helix is not a default piercing — it’s a deliberate one.
We pierce helix placements at any point along the outer rim — high, mid, low, or forward. Each session starts with a conversation about your existing piercings, your vision for the ear as a whole, and what jewelry will look best once healed. Placement isn’t guesswork here.

Placement Options
Single, stacked &
placed right.
Classic
Single Helix
One piercing placed anywhere along the outer rim — high, mid, or low. The most common starting point. Even a single well-placed flatback with the right end reads as a complete ear look. Simple, versatile, and timeless.
Placement
High, Mid & Low Helix
The helix runs the full length of the outer rim. A high helix sits near the top and reads as a focal point. A mid helix is the most versatile — the go-to anchor for a stack. A low helix transitions naturally into upper lobe territory.
Multiple
Stacked Helix
Two or more helix piercings placed in a deliberate diagonal line along the outer rim. Done in a single session or added over time. Stacking is where the helix earns its place as the centerpiece of a curated ear — spacing, sizing, and jewelry cohesion all matter here.

Why Choose The Piercing Boutique
What makes us
different.
01
We Plan the Whole Ear
A single helix in the wrong spot can limit what you can do later. We look at your ear holistically — existing piercings, your future goals, your anatomy — and place with that full picture in mind. No guesswork. No regrets.
02
Implant-Grade Only
Every initial piece is ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium or solid 14k gold. Anodized to any color, biocompatible, low-nickel. No surgical steel, no plated pieces, no mystery metals. The helix heals better with the right materials from day one.
03
Sterile Technique Every Time
Single-use sterile needles, autoclaved instruments, hospital-grade surface disinfectants. We never use guns. Helix piercings done with guns are a leading source of cartilage damage, hypertrophic scarring, and chronic irritation. The needle is not optional.
The Experience
What happens at
your appointment.
1
Check-In & ID Verification
Everyone gets carded. Clients under 18 require a parent or legal guardian present with valid ID. The child must verbally consent.
2
Ear Consultation
We look at your existing piercings, discuss where you want the helix to sit, and think about the ear as a whole. For stacks, we map out spacing so the full composition makes sense.
3
Jewelry Selection
We walk you through flatback options — post length, end style (CZ, opal, cluster, marquise, plain), and titanium anodization color. For stacked piercings, we think about visual cohesion across all pieces.
4
Marking & Approval
We mark every placement before touching a needle. For stacks, you see all marks simultaneously in the mirror and approve the full composition before we start.
5
The Piercing
One smooth pass per piercing with a sterile hollow needle. Helix cartilage is thinner and more accessible than conch or rook — most clients find it very manageable.
6
Aftercare Walk-Through
We cover cleaning, sleep positioning, hair care, and the downsize window before you leave. Call or message us anytime throughout healing.
What We Pierce With
Helix jewelry —
starting & healed.
Standard Start
Flat-Back Labret Post
The correct starting jewelry for virtually every helix placement. The flat disc back sits flush against the cartilage — no threading, no sharp edges, nothing to catch on pillowcases or hair. Available in implant-grade titanium in a full range of anodized colors with your choice of decorative end.
Healed Option
Seamless or Clicker Ring
Once fully healed, a thin seamless or clicker ring through the helix is a beautiful alternative to a stud — classic, clean, and endlessly versatile. Particularly popular as a single helix upgrade or at the lower position of a stack. Not recommended during healing due to movement.
Statement Ends
Decorative Flatback Tops
The helix is one of the best locations for a statement end because it sits slightly elevated off the ear — fully visible from front and side. Marquise fans, CZ clusters, floral designs, opal arcs, and baguette arrangements all look exceptional here.
Premium Option
Solid 14k Gold
For healed helix piercings, a 14k solid gold end transforms the whole ear. Star ends, prong-set CZs, and pavé designs in gold catch the light differently than titanium — warm, rich, unmistakably elevated. Gold is equally at home in a single helix or a stacked set.
We use implant-grade ASTM F136 titanium and solid 14k gold only. Biocompatible, low-nickel, anodized without surface coating. No surgical steel, no plated pieces, no mystery metals. Every piece we carry is appropriate for a healing helix from day one.
Helix aftercare —
do’s & don’ts.
- Clean twice daily with sterile saline spray — spritz and let air-dry
- Rinse in the shower, letting warm water flow over the helix
- Sleep on the opposite side or use a travel pillow with a center hole
- Return for your downsize at 6–8 weeks
- Tie hair back before sleeping to avoid catching the jewelry
- Keep hair products, sprays, and dry shampoo away from the area
- Contact us if anything looks or feels wrong — don’t wait
- Touching, twisting, or rotating the jewelry
- Sleeping directly on the piercing — the number one cause of irritation bumps
- Submerging in pools, lakes, or hot tubs during healing
- Ointments, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or tea tree oil
- Getting hair caught in the jewelry during brushing or styling
- Changing jewelry before fully healed
- Over-cleaning — twice a day is correct; more isn’t better
Questions & Answers
Helix piercing
FAQ.
Can I get multiple helix piercings in one session?▼
Yes — stacked helix piercings in the same session is very common and completely fine. Two or three done at once means you heal them simultaneously rather than returning months apart, and we plan spacing and composition all at once. We recommend limiting multiple piercings to the same ear in a single session for optimal healing.
How painful is a helix piercing?▼
Low to moderate. The helix cartilage is thinner and more accessible than conch, rook, or daith, so the needle passes through quickly with less sustained pressure. Most clients are genuinely surprised by how manageable it is. For stacks in the same session, subsequent piercings often feel no worse than the first because the initial adrenaline carries through.
My helix has a bump — what do I do?▼
Redness in the first few weeks is normal healing. A bump that develops later is almost always an irritation bump — a hypertrophic reaction to a specific aggravator. The most common causes are sleeping on the piercing, a long post that hasn’t been downsized, hair products getting into the piercing, or over-cleaning. Come see us before self-treating — most resolve quickly once the cause is identified and removed.
When can I switch to a ring?▼
Once the piercing is fully healed — typically 6–9 months. Rings move, and movement in a healing piercing creates constant tissue disruption that leads to irritation bumps and slow healing. A flatback post is the right choice through the full healing period. Once healed, we’ll help you find a ring with the correct diameter for your helix.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?▼
Both. Walk-ins are welcome first come, first served. To guarantee your spot and skip any wait, book at
thepiercingboutique.com/booking. Our hours are Monday 12–7pm, Friday–Saturday 12–8pm, and Sunday 12–7pm. Closed Tuesday through Thursday.
How does the helix fit into a curated ear?▼
The helix is the structural spine of most curated ears. It provides vertical height and visual movement up the outer rim, framing whatever is happening in the inner ear — conch, rook, daith. Two or three stacked helix piercings create a graduated line that the eye follows naturally from lobe to cartilage. If you’re building a curated ear from scratch, the helix is almost always the first or second placement after lobes are established.
What is a forward helix?▼
The forward helix is located at the front-most point of the outer cartilage rim, just above the tragus where the rim curves toward the face. It’s a popular single piercing and looks exceptional when stacked vertically (double or triple forward helix). Healing is the same as a standard helix — 6 to 9 months — with the same flat-back labret as starting jewelry. We offer forward helix at The Piercing Boutique.
What is the difference between a helix and a conch?▼
The helix is the outer curved rim of the ear. The conch is the flat cartilage in the center bowl of the ear. Both are cartilage piercings with similar healing timelines, but they’re completely different placements and have different jewelry options. Many curated ears include both — a helix stack on the rim with a conch piece anchoring the inner ear. We do both at The Piercing Boutique.
