The Daily Cleaning Routine
1
Wash hands first — every time
Before any contact with the piercing. Unscented soap, clean dry hands. This applies for the full 6–12 month healing period.
2
Spray with sterile saline
Sterile 0.9% sodium chloride wound wash, no additives. The tragus sits at the ear canal entrance — angle the spray to reach both the front and back of the flatback post. Let it saturate any crust.
3
Rinse in the shower
Warm water flowing over the ear after saline helps clear softened crust. Do not use washcloths or cotton swabs near the tragus — fibers and cotton catch on the jewelry and create trauma.
4
Twice daily only
Morning and evening. Over-cleaning cartilage strips the moisture and lipids that healing tissue needs. Twice, consistently, for the full healing period.
Never Use
Hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, Bactine, Neosporin, or tea tree oil. Sterile saline only. These products damage healing tissue and make problems worse.
Tragus-Specific Considerations
- Earbuds and in-ear headphones. The tragus is the small cartilage flap directly in front of the ear canal — exactly where earbuds rest. Avoid earbuds on the pierced side during healing. Over-ear headphones are fine and recommended as the alternative.
- Sleeping position. Side sleeping on a healing tragus creates pressure on the small cartilage nub. A travel neck pillow or piercing pillow is strongly recommended during the first few months.
- Phone calls. Pressing a phone against a healing tragus creates direct pressure. Use speaker mode or your opposite ear during the healing period where possible.
- Hair. Hair can catch on tragus jewelry and create acute trauma. Keep hair tied back especially during sleep.
- Glasses. Some glasses frames contact the area near the tragus. If you notice consistent friction, assess the frame fit with your piercer.
How Long Does It Take?
Tragus piercings typically take 6–12 months to fully heal. The tragus is cartilage with relatively good blood supply compared to the outer helix, which is why healing can be faster than a helix — but it still requires the full aftercare commitment.

Daily (Twice a Day)
Wash hands — unscented soap
Spray with sterile saline (0.9% NaCl, no additives)
Rinse in warm shower water
Air dry — no washcloths or cotton swabs
Rules
No earbuds on pierced side — use over-ear headphones
Sleep on back or use a piercing pillow
No rotating or touching jewelry
Use speaker phone or opposite ear during healing
6–12 months full heal — do not change jewelry early
Aftercare Questions
No earbuds on the pierced side during healing — not even briefly. The tragus sits exactly where earbuds rest, and the pressure and movement they create is one of the most common causes of tragus irritation bumps. Over-ear headphones, bone conduction headphones, or earbuds on the opposite side only.
Yes — cartilage piercings produce crust for longer than soft tissue piercings. As long as it's white or slightly yellowish with no odor, it's normal dried lymph fluid. Your twice-daily routine manages it. If the crust is green or has an unusual smell, come in for an assessment.
Don't panic — one night isn't catastrophic. Resume careful sleeping position, do a gentle saline rinse, and monitor for the next few days. If you develop a bump, continue saline and remove the mechanical cause. Come in if it persists beyond 2–3 weeks.
