The Material Standard
For initial piercings: implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136) only. For healed tragus piercings: implant-grade titanium remains excellent. Solid 14k or 18k gold is appropriate and popular. Never plated metals, mystery alloys, or fashion cartilage jewelry without material documentation.
Jewelry Styles for Every Stage
Initial Piercing
Implant-Grade Titanium Flatback Labret
A straight flatback post with a simple bezel or prong-set CZ top. Post length fitted specifically to your tragus thickness. The flat disc sits flush against the inside of the tragus with no protruding back end. This is the professional standard — nothing else is appropriate for initial tragus piercings.
Healed Upgrade — Stud
Decorative Threadless Flatback Top
Once healed, the simple CZ top can be replaced with a more elaborate threadless decorative piece. Opal ends, marquise cuts, cluster tops, and shaped pieces all work beautifully in a healed tragus. The same post stays — only the top changes.
Healed Upgrade — Ring
Small Seamless Ring or Hinged Clicker
A small ring worn in the tragus — typically 6–8mm internal diameter. Less common than a stud but creates a distinctive look. The ring sits in the tragus and the visible portion curves over the ear canal opening. Requires full healing and anatomy that supports a ring comfortably.
Gold Option
Solid 14k Gold Flatback
The most popular upgrade path for healed tragus piercings. Warm gold flatback tops in bezel or prong settings. Available in yellow, white, or rose gold. Solid gold only — no plated, filled, or vermeil.
Jewelry Questions
Tragus thickness varies significantly between individuals — typically 16g gauge, with post length ranging from 4–8mm depending on your specific anatomy. Your piercer measures and selects the correct length at your appointment. Do not select post length without a professional measurement first.
No. Hoops are not appropriate for healing tragus piercings. They move with every jaw movement, create uneven pressure on the small cartilage nub, and snag more easily than a flatback. Pierce with a flatback, transition to a ring only once fully healed and confirmed by your piercer.
A 2–3mm bezel-set CZ or a tiny flat disc in implant-grade titanium or gold is the most minimal option. The small scale suits the tragus anatomy naturally and reads as intentional rather than understated.
