For Initial Piercings: Stud Always

During healing the answer is unambiguous: a flatback stud is the only appropriate initial jewelry for a nostril piercing. Hoops move with every facial expression, create uneven pressure on the forming fistula, and snag on pillowcases and clothing far more than a stud. Even if you want a hoop long-term, piercing with a stud and transitioning after full healing gives the piercing the best possible start.

“Pierce with a stud. Wear a hoop once it’s healed. You’ll wear the hoop for years — the healing phase is a few months.”

Does Anatomy Affect the Choice?

Nostril width and piercing placement both affect which hoop diameter works correctly. A too-small hoop pinches or compresses; a too-large one sags away from the nostril. A piercer familiar with nostril anatomy can advise on the right diameter for your specific nose and placement when you’re ready to make the switch.

Stud vs. Hoop Questions

We don’t pierce nostrils with hoops for the reasons outlined above. Pierce with a flatback stud, let it heal fully, then transition to a hoop. A few months of patience for a result you’ll wear for years.
Nostril hoops typically range from 6mm to 10mm internal diameter. The right size depends on your piercing placement and nostril width. Have a piercer assess the healed piercing and recommend a diameter — an incorrectly sized hoop will either pinch or sag.
