The Material Standard
For initial piercings: implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136) exclusively. Nickel-free, biocompatible, lightweight, and properly sterilizable. For fully healed nostrils: implant-grade titanium remains excellent. Solid 14k or 18k gold is appropriate and popular. What is never appropriate: plated metals, mystery alloys, acrylic, or any jewelry without documented material certification.

Initial Piercing — Professional Standard
Flatback Titanium Labret Post
A straight post with a flat disc backing and a threadless decorative top. The flatback sits flush inside the nostril with no movement — the single best initial jewelry for nostril piercings. See our full comparison in the corkscrew vs. flatback guide.
Healed Stud Upgrade
Decorative Flatback or L-Bar
Once healed, flatback posts can be upgraded with more elaborate threadless tops — larger stones, cluster pieces, shaped designs. L-bar studs in solid gold are a common healed upgrade option.
Healed — Ring Style
Seamless Continuous Ring
A single unbroken ring with a small gap that flexes open for insertion. Seamless rings in implant-grade titanium or solid gold sit flush against the nostril for a clean hoop look. Diameter must be confirmed with a piercer for correct fit.
Healed — Ring Style
Hinged Clicker Ring
A hinged ring with a click closure — easier to open and close than a seamless ring. Available with plain metal or paved stones on the visible arc. A polished, finished look for healed nostrils.
Healed — Corkscrew Style
Gold Corkscrew Stud
A classic retention style — a decorative gem top with a curved post that sits inside the nostril. Not appropriate for healing piercings, but a popular and practical everyday option in solid gold for fully healed nostrils. See our corkscrew vs. flatback guide for the full comparison.
Best Jewelry Questions
Implant-grade titanium flatback studs for initial or everyday wear range from $25–$60 depending on the decorative top. Solid gold nostril jewelry ranges from $60–$200+. This is significantly more than fashion nose rings — but a face piercing you wear every day deserves quality materials.
A flatback stud or a well-fitted small-diameter seamless ring are both comfortable for sleeping in a healed nostril. The flatback post is the most universally comfortable because nothing protrudes from either side of the nostril wall.
