The Honest Timeline

  • 0–4 weeks: No changes. The fistula is in active formation.
  • Weeks 4–8: Downsize only, performed by your piercer. The initial post is swapped for a correctly fitted shorter one. This is not an aesthetic change — it’s a healing requirement.
  • Months 6–9: First professional assessment. A piercer evaluates whether the fistula is mature enough for a first jewelry upgrade.
  • Months 9–12: At-home changes reasonable on a confirmed fully healed forward helix.

Especially Important for Stacks

If you’re building a forward helix stack, the adjacent piercing must be fully healed before you change jewelry in either placement. Changing jewelry in one forward helix while the adjacent one is healing disrupts both piercings and sets the whole project back.

How to Change Forward Helix Jewelry Safely

1
Confirm full healing
No crust, tenderness, or discharge for at least 2–3 months. Professional confirmation before first change.
2
Good lighting and a mirror
The forward helix position makes it harder to see than outer ear piercings. Good lighting makes safe changes much easier.
3
Wash hands, lubricate with saline
Clean hands, spray saline on the piercing before removal to reduce friction.
4
Hold disc, pull top straight forward
Reach behind the ear fold to hold the flat disc. Pull the decorative top straight forward — no twisting or angling. The inner fold position makes the disc harder to reach than an outer ear piercing.
5
Insert new top promptly
Forward helix fistulas are narrow — have new jewelry ready. Press top straight into post until you feel it seat. If it resists, stop and come in rather than forcing.

Change Questions

The pin on the new top may not be bent to the right tension for your post, or the top may be a slightly different size than what the post was designed for. Bring both pieces to the studio and we'll sort the fit. Don't continue wearing a loose top.
Once all placements are fully healed, yes — mixing silver/titanium and gold in a forward helix stack is one of the most popular curated ear aesthetic choices. During healing, stay consistent with implant-grade titanium for all pieces.
